There are two hydrobowl types: Naval Architecture/Marine Engineering type, and Aerospace type. The former type has been running since the 1990's at venues that include Rockford IL, Elkhart IN, Brantford Ontario (World IHPSC), Los Angelas CA, Buffalo NY, Waldenwoods MI, Sparta WI just to name some.
Aerospace means that all competitors are primarily hydrofoils. The main rules are that the craft has to do a takeoff using a 'deep water start'. No rope assist, no dock jumps an so on. Settled deep flat water.
Just like with the Nav. Arc./Mar. Eng type, there are FOUR EVENTS to an Aerospace:
Longest Flight;
Heaviest Payload;
Slalom;
Sprint.
This a 'SHORT COURSE' event. The event will use the same setup and default rules as Nav. Arc./Mar Eng. The course is a
100 by 18.75 meters rectangle. For payload and Longest flight events, start through the line up of the end buoys, run on the outside
of the rectangle, turn right. All craft must use deep water start, and all participants must use a US Coast Guard approved PFD
(personal flotation device) life jacket.
The Longest Flight starts with a brief take-off time period (this may be UTC time with a 'warning'). After the
moment of takeoff, the competitor *must be flying*. The end of the take off period is the beginning of the flight duration. The
end of the flight duration occurs when any part of the main displacing body of the craft (i.e. the board or hull) again touches
the water. Flight duration is scientifically defined as being 'totally foilborne'. Deep water start is scientifically defined as
starting from 'at rest' displacement in flat water (see IHPVA DuPont Prize rules). Therefore, any part that supplements being
totally foilborne constitutes the end of the flight. An easy example is a board touching/skimming the water after the surfer/cyclist
becomes too tired to stay aloft via foils. For any further questions or qualifications, contact the race director. General
requirement at start: all crafts in the heat must be in the field of view of a single judging official.
Run outside the course at whatever speed, stay clear of other competitors, turn right.
The Heaviest Payload is constituted by a weigh-in of craft plus surfer/cyclist plus payload. The weight becomes official
after a minimum engagement on the course. This may be a lap or two around the course; it is TBD but will demonstrate a reasonably long and
controlled flight. Any scrape or contact with the displacing body of the craft before minimum course engagement is complete will not allow
for the current weigh-in/attempt to be allowed. Any weight can be added as long as the weights are 'soft' enough 1. to be uneventful with a
impact with the nose/face; 2. and are buyant; 3. and can be easily shed. Trash bag containing wet foam or polypropolene milk jugs filled
with water come to mind. any 'loss of weight' between the weigh in and finish is cause for disqualification. This event ran similar to
'Static Thrust' of Nav. Arc./Mar Eng. type Hydrobowl
Short course Slalom is 'three' or 'five' or 'six' pin or buoy along either side of the course. Note that Nav. Arc./Mar Eng
hydrobowls have vastly used 5 pin with a few using 6 pin. The competitor enters the trap, zigzags through either side of the course,
hair pins around the end buoys, zigzags back till passing back through the start line. Note that 5 and 6 pin starts between start
buoys; three pin starts outside them in line with the start buoys. This event ran same as Slalom in Nav. Arc./Mar. Eng. Hydrobowl.
Note that Elkhart uses standard 5 pin, and will default to three if time constraints and/or previous competitor qualifications warant.
Displacement bodies, hulls, boards etc. can scrape at any time.
Buoy touches during slalom event constitutes a ten second penalty. Touches during the heaviest payload mean weight penalty.
For the duration, a time penalty occurs, and entry-DQ for the sprint.
Time constraints will be the limiting factor in heaviest payload event (i.e. multiple tries), sprint, slalom. Multiple competitors
can run in flight duration as heats.
Sprint is a 100 meter from the start alingnment to the finish alignment with an open run up flying start. This event runs the same as
Sprint in Nav. Arc./Mar. Eng. type Hydrobowl. Displacement bodies hulls, boards can scrape any time
Reserved rights:
1. To limit the field/peliton of long-flying 'Longest Flight' competitors to within time constraints. If multiple competitors are still
going strong after time constraints, three or more scenarios could take place. They include 1. Using Heviest Paylod to decide the winner,
2. Having a 'continued flight' the next day as a tie breaker, 3. Calling it a tie. Note that there could be other possibilities, and
initial participant capabilities will help TBD.
2. To use videos to help judge the end of a flight duration attempt.
3. To prioritize the events with the 'Dry Bottom' rewarded flight run first, payload second, then sprint, slalom after/ time permitting
first.
4. If the event wraps up in time, there may be a 'Captains Surprise' event.
